چکیده
The external morphology of the fourth-instar larva Antarctic endemic chironomid midge Belgica antarctica is described. Larvae were collected from Jougla Point (Wiencke Island) and an un-named island close to Enterprise Island, off coast western Peninsula. Light microscopy was used examine document photographically structures mouthparts (mandible, mentum, premandible, labrum), antennae, pecten epipharyngis, clypeus, frontal apotome posterior parapods. Measurements are presented. data obtained compared with that available in literature. A number differences identified relating size larvae, teeth on mandibles, antennal segments length blade. Malformations mandible mentum reported for first time this species. Features larvae taxonomic value can be determine species larval stages These utility using reveal relationships other also important ecological genotoxicological studies, which require accurate level identification.

Cytotaxonomy and Morphology of Chironomid Larvae (Diptera, Chironomidae) in Armenia
In the study of chironomids in Armenia several species of Orthocladiinae subfamily of Cricotopus genus, Diamesinae subfamily of Diamesa genus, and Chironominae subfamily of Chironomus genus, have been identified. In the Cricotopus genus two sibling species were found, not distinguishable by larval morphological features, but clearly distinct cytogenetically. Keywords—Armenia, Chironomidae, kary...
متن کاملMechanisms to reduce dehydration stress in larvae of the Antarctic midge, Belgica antarctica.
The Antarctic midge, Belgica antarctica, is exposed to frequent periods of dehydration during its prolonged larval development in the cold and dry Antarctic environment. In this study, we determined the water requirements of the larvae and the mechanisms it exploits to reduce the stress of drying. Larvae lost water at an exceptionally high rate (>10%/h) and tolerated losing a high portion (>70%...
متن کاملThe larval alimentary canal of the Antarctic insect, Belgica antarctica.
On the Antarctica continent the wingless midge, Belgica antarctica (Diptera, Chironomidae) occurs further south than any other insect. The digestive tract of the larval stage of Belgica that inhabits this extreme environment and feeds in detritus of penguin rookeries has been described for the first time. Ingested food passes through a foregut lumen and into a stomodeal valve representing an in...
متن کاملExternal Morphology of Stable Fly (Diptera: Muscidae) Larvae.
Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the external morphology of first-, second-, and third-instar stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans (L.)). In the cephalic region, the antennae, labial lobe, and maxillary palpi are morphologically similar among instars. Antennae comprise a prominent anterior dome that is the primary site of olfaction, while the maxillary palpi are innervated with mec...
متن کاملDehydration-induced cross tolerance of Belgica antarctica larvae to cold and heat is facilitated by trehalose accumulation.
Larvae of the Antarctic midge, Belgica antarctica (Diptera: Chironomidae), are frequently exposed to dehydrating conditions on the Antarctic Peninsula. In this study, we examined how rates and levels of dehydration alter heat and cold tolerance and how these relate to levels of trehalose within the insect. When dehydrated, larvae tolerated cold and heat stress more effectively, although resista...
